Sighthound Spotlight Day: Getting Sighthounds Into the Spotlight Where They Belong

On 30th April 2009, my husband and I adopted our first greyhound, Ellie. It was a date that changed everything. I didn't know then how much she would change the course of my life. She sparked a deep love for sighthounds, and since then we've had several sighthounds as part of our family.

That love has shaped friendships, a community, and my career. I've spent years volunteering with rescues and rehoming centres, and it ultimately led me to build Insight Hounds, a sighthound specific training business where I work exclusively with sighthound families, specialising in supporting people with ex-racing greyhounds and the wider sighthound family.

All those years ago, there were so many myths floating around about sighthounds and ex-racing greyhounds, and to this day many still exist. So I decided to do something about it.

Because myths do not just create misunderstanding, they can affect adoption, expectations, and how these dogs are perceived.

That date, 30th April, is why Sighthound Spotlight Day takes place every year.

It is a day to celebrate these extraordinary dogs, raise awareness, challenge the myths that still follow them, and shine a light on the many sighthounds still looking for homes.

Greyhounds, whippets, lurchers, salukis, longdogs, galgos, deerhounds, borzois, Italian greyhounds and more. Pure sighthounds or sighthound crosses, we are here for them.

Sighthounds have a long and fascinating history. Bred to hunt using sight, speed and movement, they are wonderfully unique dogs with their own traits, sensitivities and quirks. Yet they are often misunderstood. Perhaps partly because they are seen through outdated assumptions, or maybe because people simply haven't had the chance to get to know them.

People assume greyhounds need endless exercise, when many are famously known as 45mph couch potatoes for a reason. They are bred for bursts of speed, often followed by very lengthy naps.

So many sighthounds are gentle, funny, sensitive and deeply affectionate. Playful, thoughtful, independent, and wonderfully characterful dogs. They really can make wonderful companions.

Sighthound Spotlight Day is about helping more people see that.

It is also about celebrating the people around these dogs and inviting more people to be part of that wider community.

If you live with a sighthound, share a photo, a story, or tell people why you love them. If you support rescue or rehoming, highlight a dog looking for a home. If you work in the pet industry, share how sighthounds are part of your world, or show one enjoying your products or services. And if you simply admire these dogs, you can help by sharing, learning, and busting myths.

It is also worth knowing that sighthounds are waiting for homes in rescues and rehoming centres all over the country. There are brilliant breed specific rescues out there, or visit any all breed rescue or rehoming centre, large, medium, or small, and it is very likely there will be a sighthound there. They can often be among the longest staying residents too. They are just waiting for someone to notice them.

You'll also find free downloadable graphics and captions in the Cheerleader Pack at insighthounds.co.uk/sighthoundspotlightday, so you don't even need to start from scratch.

Every post, every story, every myth busted, every hound highlighted, helps.

Sighthounds are often talked about through old stereotypes and assumptions about prey drive, exercise needs, trainability or temperament. But anyone who has shared their home with one knows there is so much more to them than that.

There is humour. There is sensitivity. There is intelligence. There is individuality. And often, a wonderfully large personality wrapped up in a very elegant frame.

Sighthound Spotlight Day is here to help these dogs be seen for who they really are, to raise awareness for those still waiting for homes, and to celebrate the rescues, rehoming centres, volunteers, families, businesses and wider community who support them.

The more voices, the stronger the spotlight.

This is not about one voice. It is about many voices helping these dogs be seen.

Sighthound Spotlight Day wouldn't exist without the community behind it, and this day is as much yours as it is mine.

So on 30th April, come and join in. Share your hound. Share your story. Help us get sighthounds into the spotlight where they belong. Use the hashtag #SighthoundSpotlightDay
